Business Challenge:

Cornish Orchards was acquired by Asahi as part of the Fuller’s portfolio, where it had always played a supporting role alongside Fuller’s brilliant beers. But Cornish Orchards is a special place. Originally established to rejuvenate traditional apple varieties, the farm has worked sustainably and in harmony with nature ever since.

The challenge was to grow the brand by harnessing and communicating that story through design, transporting consumers to the wide open skies of Cornwall and positioning Cornish Orchards as a super premium cider brand with a reason to choose vs. the competition.

Creative Solution:

With every drop of cider freshly pressed and blended on the farm, it’s a real cider from a real place. So the project began with an immersion trip to Duloe where we met the people, learned the history and witnessed the symbiotic relationship Westnorth Manor Farm has with nature and the local community.

Filled with this knowledge and invigorated by the Cornish air we created an identity infused with real moments from the farm, one that could communicate the feeling of the place not just the great taste of the cider.

The new brand icon is inspired by the flocks of swifts that murmurate over the farm and the weather vane that sits on top of the barn, while the squat typography of the new word marque echoes the short ‘bushel’ apple trees which line the orchards.

Canopy illustrations are inspired by the lane that approaches the farm but also reveal real moments from the brand’s home and heritage like coastal path signs, hives buzzing with bees and even the head cidermaker’s dog.

The design system was extended across all areas of the farm and its products, from uniforms, signage and merchandise through to packaging for the range of delicious ciders themselves.

We later evolved the system to accommodate a new range of fruit ciders, dialling up colour and bringing extra depth of flavour through new illustrations. And beyond that the creation of the name and pack design for ‘Avalen’ sparkling cider – Cornish Orchards most premium product to date.
